For many race horses, the series of horse races in the Breeders' Cup Championships is the culmination of their racing so far in that season. This two-day horse racing event comprising of 15 individual horse races is held annually at various race tracks throughout the United States aside from in 1996 where Woodbine Racetrack in Canada hosted this event.
Many of the horse races that comprise the Breeders' Cup Championships are grade 1 events; although, not all fit in this category. With purses ranging from USD 500,000 to USD 5,000,000, some of the top race horses participate in these races.
The history of the Breeder's Cup Championships has seen some records as expected. The jockey with the most wins in this series of races is held by Mike E. Smith at 17. He is in beating range of Jerry D. Bailey who has 15 wins as a jockey in the races of the Breeders' Cup Championships. Whereas, the trainer with the most wins is held by D. Wayne Lukas with 19 wins. The next closest has only 9 wins and is held by Claude R. McGaughey III. Allen E Paulson is the most winning owner with USD 8,730,000. Zenyatta is the horse with the highest winning amount in the Breeders' Cup Championships of USD 4,680,000. She is followed by Tiznow with a winning amount of USD 4,560,400. The next horse winning horse is under USD 4,000,000.
So far, there have been some horses that have shown their stamina and talent by winning two or more Breeders' Cup Championships races. In the Breeders' Cup Classic, Tiznow won the race in 2000 and 2001. The Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf was won in 2004 and 2006 by Ouija Board. Bayakoa and Royal Delta won the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic in 1989 and 1990 and 2011 and 2012, respectively. Four horses has won the Breeders' Cup Mile two or more times. Miesque won in 1987 and 1988; Lure won in 1992 and 1993; Da Hoss won in 1996 and 1998; and Goldikova won in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Midnight Lute won the Breeders' Cup Sprint in 2007 and 2008. The Breeders' Cup Turf is shared by High Chaparral and Conduit with two wins each. High Chaparral won this race in 2002 and 2003; whereas, Conduit won this race in 2008 and 2009. As you can see with this wins of two or more Breeders' Cup Championships races, the competition is tough making for good races to watch as a spectator.

The losses that we suffer – Monzante just like Ruffain
I was looking forward to the news release about the Mozante situation and was indeed disappointed to read about it!
The Louisiana State Racing Commission declared on the July 29 news that I read online, that they were “satisfied” with whatever was done for the race horse in order to ensure his fitness before the race. No further investigation will be done regarding the situation on July 20 at Evangeline Downs, where a champion race horse was euthanized.
Monzante who had suffered an injury to the small bones located at the back of the fetlock, a common injury among racehorses that accounts for most deaths in Thoroughbred and Quarter horses. Top vets have discovered that most fatal injuries are due to skeletal injuries which are caused due to excess training or injuries present from before.
Reading and writing about the euthenization of Monzante, it reminds me of the horrific incident of Ruffain. At the 11th running at the Belmont Park in 1975, she hit her shoulder at the gates but still continued running at the mark of 1 furlong both her sesamoid bones snapped. Jockey Jacinto Vasquez on board tried to stop her but the champion that she was; she wanted to finish the race. This led to massive injuries which were then followed by an emergency operation. Even though that was successful, she woke up from her anesthesia and struggled as if still running the race, suffering from multiple injuries she was euthanized by the medical team present.
The horrific incidents that take place seem to be common to trainers and vets who deal with the real situation. However, it becomes difficult for fans to understand the same and react accordingly. The industry faces losses on a regular, but the great names are soon forgotten!
My disappointment leads me to the only resort, where I am able to race deceased race horse legends and keep them living in the fantasy world of horse racing, commemorating and honoring the evergreen champions.

The Monzante misfortune!
I could not help but write about Monzante, a grade 1 winner who was euthanized after being sent to his barn following to the injury at the claiming race at Evangeline Downs in the morning of July 20. The controversy starts when in an article I read that he was declared “salvageable” by the veterinarians, but still euthanized by trainer Jackie Thacker. Louisiana Racing Commission is investigating the situation at hand. Thacker, who was charged with 6 animal cruelty charges in 1990, claims that the charges were dropped when the investigators found that the horses shipped to him were previously in poor conditions.
During the race, Jockey Carlos Lozada had pulled him off the run at the eighth pole, where state vet had braced the horse’s injured leg and directed him to head back to the barn. The question arises here, when the state vet had declared him salvageable, why then did Thacker along with personal vet decide to euthanize him?
On being asked, Thacker said to Daily Racing Form; “I didn’t want to see him suffer anymore.”
Charles Gardiner, the LSRC executive director said today to bloodhorse "This horse was examined and jogged the morning of the race and was pronounced sound, because he had a history of being on the vets' list before, he was brought behind the gate, and palpated and examined and jogged again. In consultation with the rider, it was verified that the rider thought the horse felt good and was enthusiastic about his chances to compete.”
With such a strong verdict it was surprising to see jockey Lozada pull back Monzante from the race! While Jackie Thacker seems to be avoiding calls from officials, I hope that the regulatory board will take strict action against the guilty solving the doubt about Monzante’s state.

Affirmed!
One of my all time favorite is Affirmed, fouled February 21, 1975 by sire Exclusive Native and dam Won’t Tell You. Laz Barrera trained; this stallion was the eleventh winner of The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing.
Known of his rivalry with one of the finest; Alydar and Affirmed were face-to-face with each other in ten such stake races since 1977 including The Triple Crown. This rivalry set off at Belmont Park at the Youth Stakes where Affirmed was the winner followed by Alyder at fourth place.
This Florida bred race horse was the first thoroughbred to have got home tremendous success for Louis Wolfson and his wife as owners. Affirmed made his career debut on May 24, 1977 at Belmont Park winning by 4-1/2 lengths, two weeks after that he won the Youth Stakes with a neck-to-neck run with Alydar. Fans were kept at the peak of their curiosity, waiting for the results of the following 10 races where these two were seen in face off.
After a four-year-old career he was sent back to California to retire as one of the most glorified race horses in the history of horse racing by becoming Thoroughbred racing’s first 2 million dollar runner!
Deceased on January 21, 2001; this stallion remains a legend even today!
However, the deceased word does not exist in the world that I come from! Here in my world of horse racing the legends never fall and fade away. Virtual horse racing keeps such legends alive. Here you can select your own horse past or present and watch them in an enthralling race of the decade. Being a gaming freak, I spend hours and hours simulating my horses and racing them against the best of the best. After playing some of the games available online, I would without a doubt “AFFIRM” that www.horseracegame.com will definitely blow your mind away!
